Creating a box bottom on your dolls
creates a flat bottom to allow them
to sit sturdier. It may sound like a
difficult task, especially if you're
a beginner; but it's easy! Just
follow along with my free tutorial
and you'll be creating box seams in
no time!
Step
1:
Stitch your pattern design on
doubled fabric using a 1/4" seam
(or, stitch on the fabric, then cut
out 1/4" from seam). The bottom of
the doll should be flat; and you
should stitch around the entire
pattern, leaving only a 2-3" opening
in the bottom.

Step
2:
Separate the front fabric
from the back fabric, then match up
the bottom seam with the side seam.

Step
3:
Pin the seams together so they don't slip when you sew.

Step
4:
Measure about 3/4 to 1 1/2"
from the corner (here I have
measured 1 1/4") and draw a line
perpendicular from the seam. The
farther from the corner you sew, the
wider your bottom will be.

Step
5:
Stitch along your marked line. Repeat steps 2-4 for other
side.

Step
6:
Clip the corners off 1/4"
from stitching.

Step
7:
Now you can turn and stuff
your doll! Stuff the bottom with
poly pellets, rags, or other weighty
item to give your doll extra support
for sitting.
